Depression is a subject I hear about quite often. My friend recently told me she has been hospitalized due to depression and it got me worried. I realized I have no idea how to help.
The problem with this illness is that, no one can really do much for the person living with depression, except listening to her grievances with empathy. What is worse than not knowing how to help is being judgemental about the depressive state a person goes through. Lines like ‘It’s all in your head’ or ‘There are people going through poverty and real struggle. Be grateful for what you got’ or ‘You’re weak’ are thrown very often in the sufferer’s face. I know how they must feel. Anxiety sufferers are also judged harshly and ‘encouraged’ to pull themselves together because ‘life’s short and it’s pity to waste it worrying’.
